How to Talk to Your Children with Communication Challenges About Their Day

As parents and caregivers, we want to know about our child's day at school. This can be especially difficult for children with communication challenges. An article on understood.com, "How to Say It: Better Questions to Ask Your Child About School" has some great ideas for engaging in a more productive conversation with your child, regardless of his/ her communication challenges. Ask open-ended questions, rather than those that can be answered with yes or no; ask questions about times that your child socializes with others, such as lunch and recess; and ask positive questions, such as "Which is your favorite class?" giving your child a chance to express concerns, rather than negative ones, that tend to stop a conversation. Contact SOMASLP if you have further concerns about your child's communication.
